Chemicals
Quick Reference for Chemical Hazards
Particularly hazardous chemicals typically found on farms include drenches, insecticides, herbicides, acids and alkali, veterinary drugs like hormone treatments, and dosatron nutrients. Chemical injury ranges from toxicity, irritation, corrosive, damage to organs, and reproductive effects. Some key knowledge for farm chemicals:
PPE must be worn when using chemicals in accordance with their safety data sheet.
Dosatron nutrients cause a range of chemical injuries including general toxicity but also causes cancer and reproductive effects. You must use PPE and minimise dust created when handling.
Drenches are particularly toxic, especially pour ons.
Never allow acid and alkali to mix - for example avoid scrubbing dairy shed floors with alkali during an acid wash as they may mix in the drains.
Oils are often carcinogenic. Wear gloves when handling.
Insecticides tend to be even more toxic than herbicides. Insecticides should only be used if absolutely necessary.
Herbicides for fodder beets are particularly toxic.
Safety Data Sheets
If a chemical injury occurs show the doctor the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the relevant chemical. If you can't find it below try a search on the internet or ask the supplier of the chemical to send it through.
Spill Kits
Spill kits are available in the blue drum at the chemical storage by the woolshed. Follow the precautions from the Safety Data Sheet for chemical spills.
Chemical Inventory
For reference by emergency services. This chemical inventory is valid at 28th March 2023.
